Technology-enabled behavior change
Many consumers struggle to align their everyday behavior and decisions with their long-term preferences and intentions. Especially in the health and sustainability domain, individuals often state that they would like to change their lifestyles towards more health- and eco-conscious behaviors. Unfortunately, however, this goal is often difficult to reach as we are commonly influenced by various forces when making decisions. These forces (e.g., lacking self-control, marketing approaches, social norms) can lead us to indulging in unhealthy food, skipping exercise sessions, using our car instead of the train, or buying and then returning clothes that we did not really like in the first place.
In this research domain, we aim to leverage the unique characteristics and opportunities digital technologies and digital choice environments offer to support individuals in changing their behaviors. Therefore, we combine the latest insights of psychological, behavioral economic, and information systems research to develop and implement technology-enabled behavioral interventions. We test the effects of these interventions by conducting online, laboratory, and field experiments in various application domains.
